Boeing is telling airlines to inspect switches on pilots' seats in its 787 Dreamliner jets after a published report said an accidental cockpit seat movement likely caused the sudden plunge of a LATAM Airlines plane flying to New Zealand. Boeing said Friday it recommended that airlines inspect the motorized cockpit seats the next time they perform maintenance on their 787s. It did not link the memo to what happened this week on a LATAM Airlines flight between Australia and New Zealand. At least 50 people were injured Monday by what LATAM Airlines described as a “strong movement” on the Chilean plane traveling from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand. “Some of the roof panels were broken from people being thrown up and knocking through the plastic roof panels in the aisle ways. Passengers were met by paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles when the flight touched down in Auckland. “If you were in your seat, you went straight up to the ceiling and bounced off the roof. CNN —Dozens of people were injured after a flight from Australia to New Zealand experienced a “technical event” that produced a sudden movement, according to the flight’s operator, with witnesses telling local media passengers were suddenly thrown around the cabin. “Flight LA800, operating the Sydney — Auckland route today, had a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement,” the statement said, which added the plane landed as scheduled in Auckland on Monday. The statement did not elaborate on what the technical event was. LATAM Airlines is Chile’s flagship carrier and stops regularly in Auckland en route to Santiago. Valentina suffered minor injuries but was treated by medical crew once the plane landed.

CNN —The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which rates cars and SUVs for safety, examined so-called advanced driver assistance systems such as Tesla Autopilot and found them wanting. Of the 14 systems tested by the agency, 11 earned a “poor” rating including Tesla’s Autopilot and so-called Full Self Driving systems. Insurance Institute test drivers also looked at what would happen if the driver became incapacitated with the automated driving system in use. Of the systems tested, only GM’s Super Cruise handled that sort of situation the proper way, according to the Institute. The Insurance Institute will continue to monitor software updates and improvements and will periodically retest the systems, Harkey said.

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — No one will face criminal charges following a two-car crash in Tacoma, Washington, that killed six Arizona residents in July, according to Pierce County prosecutors. A seventh occupant — a Phoenix man — survived with serious injuries but had no memory of the crash. Esparza was driving, and the Phoenix man who survived was in the front passenger’s seat. The driver and passenger in the BMW — a 42-year-old Tacoma man and his 40-year-old wife — were uninjured.
